Korea Trip Oct 2014 Part 9 (Itaewon & Myeongdong Hanbok)

We came across this article http://www.hellokpop.com/featured/top-5-hot-ice-creams-korea/ right before we went to Korea and we told ourselves we've got to try at least one. So here we are at Itaewon to try the Macaron ice-cream.

It was a really long walk from Itaewon subway station. So I'd suggest you guys alight at Noksapyeong instead because it would be so much closer. (we only realised that Noksapyeong was closer when we tried to walk back to the subway. Here's a map for easy navigation and you can also check out their facebook page here.

While walking we also decided to take some photos so bear with me for sharing.

So after getting lost and walking for quite a while, we finally found the place. It's actually inside an alley so you need to find the correct street.

Just look at how delicious these little treats are. They aren't exactly little, in fact they are really huge for a macaron. The biscuit was really soft and chewy and the feeling when you take a huge bite off the biscuit and ice cream is really orgasmic. The macaron is so well made that it doesn't really crumble off and it sticks to the ice cream quite well. They even provide you with forks and knifes to eat it if you want to.

We chose the yogurt berry and the cookies and cream but they have other flavours as well. It's 5300 won each but it's totally worth it.

Here's my satisfied face after eating the delicious dessert.

Next up, we headed to Myeongdong, the ultimate touristy place in Korea. It's also the place you should go if you're looking to get cosmetics and facial products. We were greeted by these two mascots in the middle of Myeongdong.

Just look at how bored the cat mascot looks but it's pretty funny because cats usually look bored as well. Wanted to visit one of these pet cafes but we were too caught up shopping and looking around that we didn't manage to do that. In fact, there are a lot of these pet cafes scattered around Seoul as well.

Saw this preacher spreading some words of wisdom but it was quite scary.

I don't know why but we always get ripped off. This supposedly popular Korean egg bread snack was going at 2000 won each and we bought 1 to try. Subsequently when we went elsewhere another day, it was going at 3 for 2000 won. Oh well, if you're heading to really touristy places like Myeongdong, it would be best not to buy their street food because it's really expensive.

What's Korea without trying the traditional costume right? We went to the Seoul Global Culture and Tourist Centre which is located in the 5th level of M Plaza. It's really easy to get to M Plaza because it's really in the centre of Myeongdong. The tourist centre not only provides free hanbok trying experience, they also have a lot of information on where to visit and don't forget to pick up free coupons and vouchers in their brochures.

You can pick your own costume but it's subjected to whether you can fit in or not. Initially I wanted to choose yellow because it's what the emperor will wear but it was too funny because the guy in front of us chose the yellow one and he looked so weird acting as the emperor. I went with the red costume and I suppose it's what the scholars would wear. Don't I look scholarly here?

They have two backdrops for you to take photos but you'll have to take your own photos. Tripods are provided there so you just need to bring along your camera. Petrine was complaining how much she looked like she's pregnant in this photo because the hanbok makes her looks so much fatter.

Time was running out and if I didn't remember wrongly, you only get 10 minutes in the costumes to take as many pictures as you can. So here's a picture of me chilling out with my bros. I thought I fitted into the crowd really well though. Reminds me a little of Sungkyunkwan Scandal though.

Settled our dinner at some tteokbokki hotpot place. I really am not made for Korean food. Ordered the mild spicy one for this seafood hotpot and it turned out spicer than every other thing I've eaten in my life. Not sure if they mixed up my order or what. But it was quite tasty though, the udon and tteokbokki was chewy enough.

After dinner it was shopping time! This is the shop you'd want to go to for cheap masks. Going at 2500 won for 10 pieces, it's certified by the cheapskate me that this is the cheapest you'll ever find in Myeongdong. I bought hundreds of them 2 years ago and surprisingly, it remains the same price. Other popular shops like faceshop or nature republic are going at 5000 won for 10 pieces and that is already on promotion.

Friendly tip, if you're intending to buy a lot of masks back, do send them back via mail because it's super heavy and takes up a lot of weight in your baggage. I didn't learn my lesson from the past trip and still bought a lot this time and I had to hand carry all the masks I bought which is super heavy.

If you're thinking that this is cheese fries, you're so wrong. This is butter fries that we decided to buy along with another huge fried chicken for supper. It turned out better than we expected. One thing I realised about Korea is that they really love butter. I tried butter rice the previous time I was here and it was unforgettable and now there's butter fries. The butter is so awesome because it's not too salty but provides a superb texture and taste to the fries as you dip them in.
