Korea Trip Oct 2014 Part 6 (Seoul Airbnb and Dongmyo)

Upon reaching Seoul, we headed straight to our Airbnb's house that we booked for the next 7 days. So that's basically how our studio apartment looked like. You get everything that you can possibly need for a stay in Korea. Even things like iron and washing machine are provided free of charge.

You can check out our host, Tommy's page here. https://www.airbnb.com.sg/users/show/5542296

We didn't manage to meet our host in person but he gave us very specific instructions on how to get to the house and the door was electronically locked so we just had to key in the password that was given to us to go in.

The house is located in between Dongmyo and Sindang but we walked from Dongmyo for the first few days just to familiarise ourselves with the neighbourhood. It's a very interesting neighbourhood because you hardly see tourists around and that is exactly what we wanted - to immerse in the local culture.

Right below our house were rows of gopchang stalls. In case you don't know, gopchang is like beef or pork intestines. It's a great part of Korean culture and every night there would be people driving past and stopping by to indulge in these grilled delicacies. They are usually seasoned with spicy sauce and then grilled unlike the Singapore style kway chap where it's braised/boiled.

We didn't really dare to try this because of hygiene consideration so we decided to walk around and look for supper instead.

We ended up with one of the best meals we'll ever have in Korea. Bought an entire fried chicken to share amongst the two of us and I swear this is the best fried chicken I've ever tasted in my life. It's so much better than KFC and the interesting part is you get to eat every part of the chicken including the neck. It's no doubt that the Koreans have perfected the fried chicken recipe in their own unique way by frying the chickens twice.

As we walked from our house to Dongmyo station the next morning, we were greeted by an amazing flea market that sold all sorts of stuff from electronics to clothing to books. This is quite similar to the thieves' market that we have in Singapore but in a much larger scale.

I even managed to pick off a few clothes at dirt cheap prices over here but after a few days I slowly got to realise that the items sold at the flea market might be second hand. I still can't confirm even up till now but a shirt at 5000 won and a set of blazer at 15000 won? It's just too good to be true.

You can get to this flea market street by alighting at Dongmyo station and taking exit 3. It's worth a visit if you want to see what the locals do during their free time. You can also pick out some cool treasures if you're lucky.

  1. The electronic lock system is an interesting one.I've not used it yet.We can even shop around to spend the free time. There are many local shops with an affordable budget.
